How to remove a Win2000 install gone bad

I'm helping a friend with a Win2000 computer problem. Here's the short version.

Win2000 wouldn't boot. Repair wouldn't work, wouldn't go into safe mode either.

Upon looking at the C directory I noticed that the "WinNT" folder was gone. I found out this was the work of a virus.

I loaded another copy of Win2000 and deleted the old "WinNT" folder.

Everything is fine but upon booting the system you have to select which OS install to run. I thought after deleting the old "WinNT" folder Win2000 would recognize that is a nonexistant choice and delete it.

Anyway, is there a way to make Win2000 just load up the only remaining OS install? It's a pain to have to select the OS every boot up.

Thanks for any help.

When you reinstall you should have reformat first. You can edit the boot.ini file with notepad to make just that one OS appear. Or you can just go to Control Panel/System/Advanced. In Startup and REcovery click on Setting and change the default startup OS to the one you want and set the time to 0.

If you had a virus it would be best erase the drive (I like KILLDISK )and then format, new installation.

or you can edit the c:\boot.ini with notepad and just take out the old OS entry in there. assuming you know which one it is. 😛
