Ok so I recently upgraded a machine to XP, and I have lost my sound mixer. I cannot use the sound at all and while there is a working sound card in the machine (I even tried a diffrent sound card to no avail) Windows does not recognize it and says there is no sound device. I have reinstalled the sound drivers several times, and made sure there are no IRQ conflicts anyone have any ideas?

I'd like to try and help but can you be more specific?

what type of sound card you using?
do you at least see the multimedia in your device manager with the yellow "!"? or is it just not there?

I would: move the sound card to another PCI slot
lookup compatability on this type of sound card.

danny~!

Its like a Mad Dog sound card but it is a Cmedia 4.1 chip sound card, it functions fine in another machine. I'm 99% certain it is a windows issue. The driver installs perfectly and windows does not bring up an error message on the device manager. It even shows up as a multimedia device, however when I goto the Multimedia/sound properties all of the options are grayed out saying there is no sound device.

In Control Panel (show as icons, not catigories)-> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Volume (tab) there is a check box to Place volume icon in the task bar. On many systems this is disabled by default. Is this what you're talking about?

On XP the default setting is to hide the small speaker icon by the clock, this speaker icon is the Windows system mixer.

As a previous poster said, it simple to re-enable it: "In Control Panel (show as icons, not catigories)-> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Volume (tab) there is a check box to Place volume icon in the task bar)

Good lord I know how to show my sound properties in my taskbar.

The rundown of the problem.
1. I cannot get anything to play out of the speakers.
2. Whenever I access anything to do with sound it says there is no Sound Mixer install or no sound device etc.

I know.
1. The sound card works
2. The setup has worked in the past with Win2K, but did not work upgrading to XP
3. There are no IRQ conflicts
4. There seams to be no driver conflicts, and I have reinstalled the driver several times and windows never reports an error.

What I think the problem is.
I think that the base level sound mixer in Windows did not install right or something to that effect, as the device driver seams to work fine just windows is not seeing it right. I am looking for someone who knows a way I can reinstall the base level sound properties in windows.

Its a built in sound card on the MOBO, have you gone into the bios and enable it?
