How to register with ICQ without installing the ICQ application?

I would like to register with ICQ but would rather not use their program. Normally, in order to get an ICQ account one would install the ICQ app (register during install).

Is this possible?

Hmmmm, that does not sound readily do-able. Normally you only are able to setup an ICQ account when installing their software. I haven't tried doing what you are suggesting but it may be possible. Please, please, please tell me you are not using LAIM from AOHell.

Thats a nice Java applet for ICQ...

However, I must be an existing ICQ member to use it.

Here is the quote from the ICQ site:

<< How do I register to use ICQ Webbie?

You don't. However, you must have an ICQ# before using ICQ Webbie. If you don't have an ICQ#, you can register for one by visiting the ICQ Download Center first. Then from the ICQ Webbie Homepage, click on the Start ICQ Webbie button > Enter ICQ# and ICQ Password > Connect button.

Looks like I have no choice but to install the crummy ICQ app then remove it to do what "I" want.

Dr Doo Doo :),
Are you using Jabber now? How do you like it compared to ICQ, AIM, etc? I've been using ICQ for a couple of years so I guess I've gotten used to it's quirks, I can't stand AIM. Is it a stand alone program or is it a web browser based plugin? Thanks for any info. BTW, I used to live in sunny south FLA (Boca Raton) and I can't believe how crazy the population boom has gotten down there in the last 10 years.

Well, thanks for that tiny bit of earth-shattering information NoreCnn but if you had taken the 5-10 seconds to actually read the postings in this thread you would have seen that DocDoo has already come to that conclusion (yesterday!). Did you ever think that some people actually visit these forums to get help and advice with computers and software and don't need the condescendingly sophomoric remarks such as "WOW, so hard"? And this from a "golden" member, sheesch. Your new word of the day is "tact", from dictionary.com:

tact (takt) n.
1.Acute sensitivity to what is proper and appropriate in dealing with others, including the ability to speak or act without offending.

Hey there PullMyFinger...

I like Jabber because it offers the intergration for other IM services. It's actually a pretty clean app (stand alone). While it does not have all the advanced functions as the ICQ client, it fits my needs since I only use it for messages.

I am actually in Palm Beach County. There is sooooo much construction here that if you go away for 3 months and return, you will not recognize anything. For example, I'm sure you are familiar with "Clematis" (downtown hot spot), well there is now "City Place" that suddenly poped up out of no where. It's right next to the "Kravitz Center." City Place is essentially a combination of Clematis and Mizner Center (on steroids) :D

While I LOVE the ocean here, I have been thinking of moving to the N.W (mountains). Even Fargo ND would be nice :)

Just found out.

Should you need to create a new ICQ account but don't feel like downloading the ICQ client to do so, check out our new UIN generation utility.

Disclaimer: We won't be heavily supporting this. If it doesn't work, we're very sorry in advance. There is no proxy support either.

Download it here: icqCreateUni.exe

I knew there was an answer to my question :D
