How to reformat my W7 PC

I bought W7 a long time ago for my pc, when it (w7) was new. I believe it was a Windows 7 HP 64 Upgrade

Lets say i want to reformat my PC and do a fresh install either due to corrupt OS or getting a new SSD. i have the product key in hand.

How do i go about this?
 
I found this out just recently.

It's real annoying but...install Windows twice. The upgrade license looks for a prior version of Windows in the .old folder it will make, doesn't matter if it's an unactivated version of the same OS.
