How to reformat/log into old iMac without password?

I'm not looking to snoop or hack, but after building a computer for my neighbor's son, he gave me his wife's iMac 600 to work on. It seems to be password protected, and they aren't sure of the password.

I'd like to just format it, but I can't get it to boot with the cd.

Any hints or suggestions?

Are you holding down the letter "C" on the keyboard while booting the CD? Sorry if you are already aware of this, but that's the traditional way to boot from an Apple.
