I'm on a Comcast plan that has a nominal price of $186. Thanks to a "special deal" it's a $120 plan (with $20 in rental fees tacked onto it).

This sucks.

I only really need internet, though I'd like to have basic tv. I don't care for ESPN, etc channels.

But...when I log in to Comcast, they don't even show all of the options available. They only show more expensive upgrades.

What sort of cheaper plans are out there? I've tried to google this a few times but no luck.

Call them.

You could probably downgrade to basic cable service with internet.
Buy a modem and save on that rental fee.
Shop around. But based on what I know of Comcast territory, it tends to be pretty much single-service with some shitty DSL provider as the alternative.

Ask for the limited basic + internet plan. That's what I had.

I ended up dropping limited basic which was $20/month since I didn't use it but it made my internet go up $10/month, so I still came out ahead.

What channels are on limited basic?

The only channel that really matters is the food channel...now I think some of the more basic ones do offer Comedy central so hopefully food channel is on there too.

Limited basic is just networks and local government. There is an "expanded basic" which I think has now been converted to "digital starter" that probably has food network. I don't know what that costs though.

go for the internet only option, tv is bullshit.

I was thinking the same. When I was in South Korea I had a $20 internet payment and that was it. If I wanted to catch up on the news I'd go online.

Invest the money that you would have spent on Comcast and put it into some type of fund. Are you young? Can you imagine what you can have in 30 years? What I'm talking about is the latte effect. Discard the cr*p from your life and invest it! Even if it's a measly $5 a day. That's $150 a month.

+1 Even then, it's creeping up $5 here and there. Cable internet is pretty much how the entire basic cable/premium used to cost a decade ago LOL. None of the triple play BS for me, cell phone and interwebs is where it's at.

I've got to tell a little story. For the first time, we spent the winter in a warmer climate. The condo rental had the slowest tier of internet that Comcast offered. I noticed zero difference for the kind of internet usage I do. Now mind you, I'm not streaming video or doing heavy downloads. The biggest downloads I did were updates from Microsoft. But my wife and I, each with a laptop, could do everything we wanted simultaneously through a wireless connection.

Do you have a home phone? I went from the triple play (dropping TV) to the double play (yes, they have it but don't advertise it) keeping Digital Voice Unlimited and Performance Internet. I am renting their modem/router combo for $8 and with tax included my bill is $71.64.

I am considering dropping the phone later this summer and going to a solely internet monitored alarm for the home. The alarm is why I have kept the phone service so far.
