Anyone have suggestions? I'm not familiar with recovering data from laptop hard drives.

I need to know what steps to take and etc :x. Is there a way I can connect her laptop to my desktop so I can try to get information off of it?

Thanks,
Taejin

ps. Where can I find information on what notebook hard drive I can buy for her laptop? Or should it not matter?

If the drive is not dead, then you can hook it up to your desktop. Either use an adaptor ($3.50) and hook it up to one of your IDE ports, or a USB adaptor ($9.99) and hook it up externally. Personally I'd go for the USB adaptor because it is more flexible, plus doesn't require opening up your computer.

Agree with Zap's USB external suggestion. I have done that for years with my lappies. I always create a duplicate drive by cloning once a week. That way, if a drive fizzles - another is ready to take its place.

The external drive case now has more options - two are better than USB for speed - Firewire and eSATA. But, ports for them are not as common as USB.
