How To Record What You Hear

I have an Abit IS7-V2 motherboard.
It has onboard sound.

In my old system I had an SB Live! sound card that included software that allowed me to select "What You Hear" to record well, what you heard coming through your headphones or computer speakers with whatever software you chose to record with.

How can I record what I hear with my Abit IS7-V2?
The can't do anything with the AV Rack software that came with the MOBO.
It allows me to select line-in, mic and something else for record sources.
No matter what I select, the levels don't move and nothing is recorded.

I can record with Adobe Audition but I can't select What I hear to record anything coming across the sound processor bus.

My old SB Live! card isn't XP compatible.
Do I have to install another sound card and somehow use the onboard sound to play sound and the sound card to record sound from the onboard sound or vice-a-versa?

Thanks

Your onboard sound should have three ports. A stereo speaker output, a line-out and a line-in. Line out can be connected to any sound recorder.

Are you certain that your SB Live isn't XP compatabile?? Once you disable your onboard sound you should be able to install the SB Live, after getting the latest XP drivers for your particular card from Creative.
I use the MS Digital Media Edition add on software for my audio recording. It provides me a basic "no frills" analog recorder that among other things lets you record "what yu hear".

Thanks corkyg.
So I could loop from my onboard line-out to the line-in of an add-on soundcard.
I remember thinking of that before but i forgot.
Thanks

Thanks jjsbasmt,
I know I got an error message stating incompatibility when I tried to install the SB Live! Platinum drivers and software that would provided an app to record "What You Hear".
I'll check MS' site for the DME add-on software.
Is it a free DL?
I have a MadDog 6.1 SC I got ages ago.
It's XP compatible.
The pics in the limited docs show that it's mixer software MAY have a record what your hear ability. I'm just guessing what the small icons may mean.
Thanks

Generally, if you are using an add-on sound card, you would disable the on-board sound. Then it becomes fairly simple. Having both an on-board sound system working at the sme time as an add-on sound card can cause some conflicts.

open volume control. click on options, properties, the choose recording.

make sure wave out mix, or stereo mix is selected and hit ok. then make sure its selected again. i suggest leaving the volume slider low like the default setting.

Corkyg,
By using both the onboard and an add-on?
People are saying I'd have to disable my on board sound.
Do I have disable my onboard sound and add two add-on sound cards?

JonnyBlaze,
Wav is there but I still can't record what I hear.

Thanks
