how to record sound from line in?

i'm trying to patch audio from a stereo into a line-in from my sound card (mx300 vortex2 chip) to be recorded in some program in windows. i've looked at the windows recorder and cooledit 2000, and dont see an obvious solution. i can play the audio through the line in channel but don't see a way to record it (i think it always wants to use the mic as input)

basically i have some books on tape that i'd like to put onto a cd. (going on a road trip in a car without a tape player, but with a cdplayer.) i thought it would be cool to rip a few of them and put them on cd.

any ideas?
