How To Receive Files Using Linksys Network

I have a linksys network in my house. 2 computers. My daughter says that she can send files over ICQ, but cannot receive files from other people. She could before I setup the network. Is there a quick solution to this problem. Does this have to do with the built in firewall in the Linksys Unit.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tks

I'm not sure of what ports ICQ uses, but you would need to enable them. Be carefull though ICQ is not the most secure software out there.

Yes, when you are behind a firewall, someone trying to send you something, trying to iniate a new connection from the outside world, will get stopped at the Linksys firewall. The quick and easiest solution is to DMZ your daughter's IP address. This would give her machine complete access both ways to the net. That of course kills any protection the linksys firewall gives her.

Your 2nd option is to go into her ICQ client under the networking (or security I think it might be) settings, specify a range of ports for it to use (ie 1500-1519 is the default I believe) and set the Linksys to forward those ports to her internal IP address. This is a much more secure way than DMZing her IP. File transfers should work both ways this way. If they don't then there must be some specific ports that you'll have to figure out to forward to her IP. You may also want to check Mirabilis' website for more info.

You need to configure the ports.

Go into your linky config and open ports 20000-20059 in relation to her IP addy. If your not using Static Ips on your linky, then you will have to open the above ports throughout your entire network.

Go into ICQ, ( use 2000b minus the ads )Click on the big ICQ button, then Preferences and finally Connections. Click on SERVER then choose Using Firewall then choose Not Using Proxy. Then mosey on over to USER and click on Use The Follow TCP Listen Ports For Incomming Events.. Then plug in 20000-20059.. You will then need to restart ICQ and all is well.
