win2k is assigning irq 9 to my video card and sound card and network card. the video card is causing win2k to freeze at startup (if i use any video driver that doesn't come with win2k) and I need to give it an unshared irq to fix the problem --- according to the card's manufacturer. does anyone know how to do that? thanks a lot!!!!

In your manual it should tell you which PCI slots share IRQs with eachother, you may need to move your sound card and nic to PCI slots that aren't shared with your AGP slot

From my experience since irq 9 is a cascaded irq and not a normal one I always recommend setting irq 9 as a legacy non pnp one in the bios.

i have the same exact sharing issue with the same combo of pnp components sharing irq 9 in win2k. when i called the ati guys for my aiw128 pci card, they said to switch slots, same was told by sb live people. so try switching the slots for the cards.

also, correct me if i am wrong but isn't it true that agp doesn't share irq with any other slot? anyways, try the swapping. it should work.

According to the manual on page 32, the AGP slow shares INT-A with PCI slot 1. PCI slot 2 is the only slot which does not share an IRQ (INT-B).

And in case you're wondering, PCI slot 3 shares INT-C with the AMR.
PCI slots 4 and 5 share INT-D with the onboard USB controller.

So there ya go :)

thx sir fredrick for that info. just one question. is slot one the one right next to the agp slot? and 2, the one after that and so on...?

so you mean to say that pci slot 2 is the only one that doesn't share irq and if you have a bandwidth hungry card - eg. tv tuner/capture card that is currently pnp set to share irq with 3 other devices, then i can put it in slot 2 and it will now have its exclusive access channels? if so that would be great b/c i've been having problems and wanted to swap slots anyways. if this is true, it might just solve the problems i am having with the clikcind noise in sb live in 98 and 2k.

so can you confirm my rephrasing of your earlier post? thanks!

Right, PCI 2 is the only one that is not share with anything else. Slot 3 is alright if you don't use the AMR slot though.

I also found this neat bit of info in the manual:

IRQ 3 - Priority 11 (COM2)
IRQ 4 - Priority 12 (COM1)
IRQ 5 - Priority 13 (free)
IRQ 7 - Priority 15 (LPT1)
IRQ 9 - Priority 4 (ACPI MODE)
IRQ 10 - Priority 5 (IRQ holder for PCI steering)
IRQ 11 - Priority 6 (IRQ holder for PCI steering)
IRQ 12 - Priority 7 (PS/2 Mouse port)
IRQ 14 - Priority 9 (Primary IDE)
IRQ 15 - Priority 10 (Secondary IDE)

I only listed the IRQs taht the manual says are usually available for ISA or PCI devices.

I don't know if that would solve your problem but I'd say it's worth a shot.

The layout is not identical, but it is similar.

It seems that Slot 2 is still the only unshared one, but INT-A is shared with Slot 1, Slot 5 and AGP slot
INT-C is the same, and INT-D shares PCI 4 and USB

No mention of it in the manual but I think the IRQ priorities are the same.
