the website doesnt really give clear instructions, do you put a small dap on the processor and lay the heatsink on it to spread it? or do you put it ont he bottom of the heatsink, spread it, then clean it off? or what?

I think it would be better to put a small dap on the acutal CPU rather than on the heatsink.

That's how it was for AS3. I smoothed out the "roughness" on the heatsink using AS, then put the stuff on the cpu and it was done.

Side note... Why this forum?

what other forum?

so how do I do it? put some on the heatsink, spread it out, clean it off? then a dab on the CPU, mount the heatsink and let it spread itself?

General Hardware?

CPUs/Overclocking?

Unless your question is specific to video hardware, it doesn't really belong here.

although this is the wrong forum, AS' specific instructions are to spread a VERY thin layer on both the heatsinks contact area and chip, then put the mount the heatsink on the cpu.

This is incorrect for a cpu with a heatspreader such as the P4 or A64.

On an Intel P4 or Athlon64 type CPU with a large metal heat spreader, put a small amount of Arctic Silver onto the center of the heat spreader as shown in the photo.

Only a small amount of Arctic Silver is needed

P4- About the size of an uncooked grain of short-grain white rice or 1/2 of a BB.

Athlon64- About the size of one and a half uncooked grains of short-grain white rice or 3/4 of a BB.

That's what I did, except I spread the stuff on the CPU out myself with a credit card. Note the post above mine.

No. The point of spreading it on the HS then taking it off is to "fill in the little nooks and crannies in the HS", as the instructions told me.

I mean it isn't used for sticking the heatsink onto the northbridge and stuff like that is it?
