How to put a 80mm fan on Swiftech MCX4000?

Just got a Swiftech MCX4000, I'm beginning to think it was a waste of money. I had an alpha pal on my 1.8a, but I thought the MCX4000 would be nice for my 2.6C. The heatsink came with the magnetic no bearing TMD 70mm. The thing is how you attach an 80mm fan? The screws are "suppose" to work fine with 80mm fans. I tried putting the screws in normally from the top, but the screws are too short. Then I tried slipping the screws like this:

However, the screws hit the mobo and the fan isn't really secured since the screw is now too long.


Anyone have a MCX4000 that has a 80mm? Maybe I am stupid and doing something perfectly wrong?

The MCX4000 is supposed to be supplied with three different sets of screws depending upon the fan used. They are as follows:

6-32 x 2.25" for 70 x15 mm fans
6-32 x 2.50" for 80 x 25 mm fans
6-32 x 1.50" for other 80 mm fans

The 6-32 x 1.50" are for mounting 80mm fans other than the 25mm thick varieties, and should be through the lower lip of the fan as shown in your linked picture.

If you are in fact using the 6-32 x 1.50" screws and they are still too long, you could try to use 1.25" length screws from a hardware store (if they would not then be too short), or trim your existing screws down to the proper size, or possibly use washers as necessary if they would fit OK on the lower lip of the fan.

sadly most of online stores only include 4 screws for the fan, which are for 70mm fans it looks like. I'm going to return the stupid heatsink and suck up the restocking fee. To even use a 92mm, I have to fork over money to buy the retention brackets. I'll stick with my alpha pal instead. At least they include the correct screws and spare screws and nuts.

The instructions even state it only comes with 4 screws for the fan.

btw, the YS Tech TMD fans have had a history of problems. These are the magnetic fans with no bearings. The most problems have been from the fan spinning out of control or the fan trying to start but it fails to and just stops dead when booting. I fall into the latter.
