How to properly set up 1080p TV with computer?

I just moved our old bedroom television to my computer and am trying to get it set up properly. It's a Sceptre 40" 1080p. When connected and set to 1920x1080 the desktop is not displayed properly. Within the nVidia control panel I created a custom resolution of 1780 x 1004 using the sliders (overscan/underscan) and now my screen is filled properly. I'm wondering if this is the best way to accomplish this? The text doesn't seem nearly as sharp as my 28" I-Inc monitor (1920x1200) but I guess that could be due to the pixel density.

I'm sure there's a better way but I've Googled and can't figure it out. Oh yeah, and my television loses signal like every 30 sec to 1 min for a few seconds, then comes back showing that it has found a 1920x1080p signal.

So, my TV is difficult to navigate without a remote. I decided to find my remote and go to the menu. There's a setting called: 1:1 , and it was OFF. I turned it on and BAM, looks perfect!

I will say, I am seeing some screen flicker when I scroll and even when I'm typing this, the line I'm typing on I will see a flicker. Any idea what causes that? Crappy television? I never saw this before with my 3 LCD's.
 
Perhaps a bad cable or bad DVI => HDMI adapter?

They're a dime a dozen these days, so it might be worthwhile to buy a spare of each (different brand). Even if that isn't the problem, it never hurts to have spares. 😀

Nah, I doubt that's it. If I scroll down a webpage the part of the screen that is refreshing flickers. The top of the window (address bar, favorites etc.) that is static doesn't flicker. Just whatever is refreshing. It's set to 60 hz. No clue.
 
i just connected my computer to my new Panasonic Viera 37" 1080P IPS-panel LCD with DVI to D-sub (15 pin) cable. works perfect, no settings necessary. next on my list is an HDMI cable to use a DVI-HDMI converter on the computer side.

Flicker issue sounds funky. What is your refresh at in Nvidia control panel? Mine sometimes jumps to 25hz unexplicably and I have to manually set it back to 60.

Well, that is prolly why my rendering was so pathetic when I tried to hook mine up to the TV out of curiosity a few weeks back. I can't be bothered to try again, but if I ever do I'll remember to check those settings.

You're lucky that there is a 1:1 setting. My friend bought a 32" 1080P Sceptre from Microcenter a year or two ago, and it too overscans. He's using a ATI 3450, so he has to adjust the screen res downward like you did, and things aren't quite as clear as they probably should be. But his TV has no 1:1 setting that I could find. What menu is it under?

And how old is your TV?

My Westinghouse is 1:1 automatically, no overscan issues. That's good. But there is significant color crawl. It's like they force the digital input signal to go through analog or psuedo-analog processing, for sharpness, color, etc., before displaying it onto the screen. So my RED is blurred like a 10-year old RCA CRT TV that's going out. Yes, using the HDMI input.

It should be 1:1 and there shouldn't be flicker. Make sure refresh is set to 60 not 59hz.

Also SOME TVs (like Samsung) require Source list edit and set to PC for that Particular HDMI input or it sill have bars on the side and will not display correct resolution.

I believe my Sharp had the same issue as well.
