How to properly dispose of a computer?

I've got a machine that's mostly screwed, bad power supply, motherboard is hosed..etc. I plan on ditching the whole thing + the case. I know you're not supposed to just pitch this in the trash, and computer parts have a little "no trash" icon on them, but they don't give any suggestions on what to do with it. How do I properly dispose of this thing??

Around here I just put on curb and someone will pick up for scrap value. Could always take to scrap yard yourself!

This is easy, just call your local trash agency that services your city/town/neighborhood.

They'll gladly arrange a pickup for the PC and anything else electronically hazardous. This is how it works in my city, there's no charge and they encourage you to do so if you have electronic parts or anything else with a "NO TRASH" icon on it.

There is no electronic recycling program where you live?

Every monitor, TV, printer, hand held, tower and laptop is subject to a recycling fee where I live.
