how to properly configure a home router

my router is a netgear wireless 108Mb with "fire wall" or so it advertises

i have the password changed along with the WPA encryption in place

(SSID is still being broadcast incase friends come over)

im curious as far as the port forwarding and port triggering

what one would be best to use and how would i go about blocking and opening ports?

-so far i have AIM and VOIP in the router with their default ports on

but for some reason i still have trouble connecting to people on AIM for direct connections

seems i can't make the direct connection, but if the other person initiates it, we can connect fine.

In AIM, go to Edit Preferences > File Transfer. You will see a port over there. Type in a port there, and foward that port on your router.

Thats the exact same router I got yesterday. Along with a Netgear 108Mb wireless card for my gaming computer.

Have you noticed wireless computers dropping offline once every hour or so?
It seems like I always have to stop and start the signal and then go hunt for the stuff in My Network Places again.

its on the router config, go into the router and go into "WAN setup" then uncheck the box that says "Connect Automatically, as Required" unchecking that will make it so the router doesn't drop a computer every hour or so, once the computer is connected now the router shouldn't drop it, also i hear there is a router by d-link that is supposed to be great for games, its about 150 bucks

it flags game packets and puts them as high priority
