My friends in Asia say it depends on which dialect/accent you hear from. Those regional pronunciations are hard to listen to. Just listen some English words from "Swam People" and yes, they are real and not just acting because I met a few of them in southern Louisiana (Cajuns).

Yeah, about Ánh: we had a conference where I got welcome table duty. One of the attendees on the list was Ánh Nmn Nguyễn (surname last because this is America, dang it). Anyway, me and the other greeter had a pretty good idea of how to pronounce Ánh and we knew how to pronounce Nguyễn but we were totally stumped as how to pronounce Nmn. We asked one of the organizers about it and she gave us what can only be described as the ultimate, "How can you be so damned stupid" look.

but without the first "Me" sound. Just imagine how the written Vietnamese language was made. If I learned correctly (and I know very little Asian languages and certainly not Vietnamese), then a French speaker wrote it in French in as short of a word as possible. This was because the Dutch French settled there when written language was not common. So, if you know any French, just pronounce it like you would in French. Or even if you are English, you aren't too far off just pronouncing it as is. You'll be close, but just as far off as the original French were when they tried to learn the language.
