How to prevent MSN messenger from loading at startup in WinXP pro.

I tried disabling it in the msconfig/startup utility but it just keeps enabling the checkmark by itself!

Very annoying.

I just want to disable it and not permanently remove it from my system as I wish to use it once in a while, at my own choosing.

1. You need to start the Group Policy Editor, at the run menu type gpedit.msc (Obviously be careful in here)

2. Exit Messenger

3. Start navigating at Computer Configuration, then go to:

Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Messenger

4. Double-click "Do Not Allow Windows Messenger To Be Run," and choose Enable to block Messenger from loading.

This should diable Windows Messenger. Hope it works for you, Oh and you must be logged in as admin in order to get the Policy Editor to run.

Better yet, get the little sucker off your system entirely.

Enable view hidden files, goto c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf. Do a find on ",hide," and replace w ",". Go into add/remove programs and look at all the new stuff.

EDIT: Just saw that part about wanting to disable it and not uninstall, oh well....might help somebody.

Funny thing though... since I disabled MSN Messenger, anytime I log into my hotmail account it is incredibly slow. If I try and close that session of IE 6 , it takes about 30 seconds from the time I click to close it, before it finally closes... or when I try and delete a message its the same thing... Yet no other IE widow that I have open is affected. I don't know if its coincidence or if there is more to it...

Why don't you do it the right way?

Open Windows Messenger, go to Tools -> Options -> Preferences, and uncheck "Run this program when Windows Starts"

Edit: Ooops... I just noticed that you said MSN messenger. My tip is for Windows messenger...
