Your sentence structure sucks: "How to politely tell someone you can't get away from (that?) they need to stop talking because they're being annoying. "

haha. Just kidding. Seriously, you need to be upfront with the guy. Just politely tell him that you don't really want to talk right now because you would like to do something else. If you want to spare his feelings a bit more, let him know that the two of you can pick up the conversation later.

Ok......youre right, poor grammer.

So?

For instance I'm trying to read a book and his dad insists on bothering me.

LOL

Tell him you are trying to read, and you'd appreciate it if he'd be quiet.

I learned this from David Spade.
You hold up your hand in front of their face and interrupt them. You say:
"Excuse me, I just remembered something. You are boring and I have legs." Then you walk away.

Yes it's grammar, and yes I know that lol, and no I didn't have to google for it.

god, my wifes father is like this...the man takes the most mundane subject and talks into the ground and them flies into something totally irrelevant....it's like having a a conversation with a 6 year old.

I have tried everything possible to get him to keep it short or stfu....now I just carry my cell phone with me and when my wife or other in law is in the room I act like I have a phone call and pawn him off on them....we actually make a game of it....good times during the holidays...we try to see who can hang the longest without being drunk....I am usually blasted in about 2 hours...then he's tolerable...:D...oh and did I mention his breath always smells like he ate a sh*t sandwich.

My mom would know. She knows the most polite way to get out of anything.
It usually involves lying, like pretending she got a call or has an important errand to run.

Thats what her generation considers polite best for society: Lies.
It would explain why she voted for Bush, twice.

As for me, I think the most polite thing I could do is simply turn around and walk away. Anything I said would hurt his feelings even more. Eventually he would learn that when I start looking in another direction its time to stop with the chat.

EDIT: That doesnt work at nursing homes. You can walk out, have a burger, come back and the old ah heck is still in the middle of his story.

one of the security guards at my office is like that.

I think because he sees me just sitting at a computer, he doesn't think I'm doing anything important and that I have time to shoot the shit with him for 5 hours because he has nothing else to do.

I make it a deliberate practice to show absolutely no interest in anything he's saying.

we also make it a bit of a practice that if two people are in the office and he's talking to one of them and doesn't appear to be shutting up any time soon, the other person will walk into another room, call the office on their cellphone, and give the person in the office an excuse to tell him to gtfo.

Well, what I eventually did was called mom and asked her to come pick me up.

Explained it to them that this was the first time I was getting along with my mom well when I was home over break (this is true) and that I felt like I should be spending more time with her because of this (this is also true).

So, win, got out.

edit: the stuff about reading, my friend was asleep and he was just talking at me. I have no obligation to him or to my friend to listen to my friend's annoying dad shoot the sh*t over nothing in particular, peppering every other statement with "you know?" expecting a verbal affirmation that no, I am not deaf.
