How to play OGG and FLAC on your iPod!

That's pretty neat. Of course I've actually got a Karma so it doesn't really mean much to me, but it is still pretty cool.

According to the article, I can't play iTunes purchased music on it? Anyone know if that's true or not (the accuracy of the article is in doubt, see comments below the main article).

I have been running this on my ipod for a few weeks. It works well, but my itrip does not work with it.
I don't have any itunes songs so I don't know if they will play on it.

Can you easily switch back using the plain old ipod firmware updater?

it says you can manually copy itunes files near the top. didn't read the whole article but i would assume that if it couldn't play itunes songs, why would you want to copy them from it?

It says you can use itunes to copy songs, not copy iTunes store songs. Actually it more or less explicitly says you can't in reference to DRM.

You can actually switch between the rockbox and the ipod operating system easily when you boot the device. It you want to restore it to the original boot loader, you can do that as well.

Going to give this a try probably. How's the battery life? Or more accurately how bad is it? Are we talking an hour or just 8 vs 14?

That is the major drawback for me. I have a good deal of itunes store songs that I listen to on my iPod, that and this would probably void may warranty......

I'm probably out of warranty but still in the BB replacement plan.

I have 4-5 albums from iTunes. I can always burn to CD then use apple's lossless encoder to get them back on the iPod, I suppose.

Installed this last night. I don't recommend it unless you really want one of the features. I mean REALLY want. Installing was painless, but in order to get album art and most of the color themes, you have to download the source code, apply patches, and compile it. No thanks.

The interface is really tough to handle. I have to hold down play for 2 seconds (but not 4 seconds!) while playing a song to get back to the file list. I have TagCache going but can't for the life of me figure out how to add songs to a playlist when in tagcache mode. Or any mode really.

There appears to be no way short of resetting the iPod to get back to the root level of file browsing.

AAC playback is utterly horrific. As I feared no DRM enabled AAC files even show up. And regular AAC skips, resets, and just does not play at all really.

I like the equalizer, it may in fact be a little TOO good, because I don't really understand all the settings.

I'd recommend waiting until at least 3.0... the thing is buggy, eats battery life like you would not believe (my estimate is 4-5 hours of use, if you are really lucky).

If you do try it, I recommend using the firmware that makes the apple OS the default and only when you hold down menu when booting will rockbox load.

It is only a very small percentage of people who even care to trade FLAC and OGG for iTunes Music. It is a terrible trade off and I'd never do it.
