How to play MP3s in Winamp through all 5.1 speakers

My neighbor got a new set of 5.1 speakers today which he hooked up to his motherboard Realtek AC97 6.1 soundcard.

Movies play alright through all speakers, same with MP3s in Media Player 6.4. But when he plays MP3s in Winamp, they only play out of the 2 front speakers (no sub - and thus bass - either). We tried installing Winamp 5 also which made no difference. We searched in his soundcard control panel, Winamp preferences but didn't find an option to make it work.

The configuration is as follows:
Luxeon 5.1 speakers
Realtek AC97 sound on a Gigabyte 845PE motherboard
Windows 2000
Media Player 6.4
Winamp 2 and 5

Thanks in advance!

right click on winamp anywhere on the player>properties
then the general tab...i think i dont have WA here.
you need to find the box, allow hardware acceleration and check that. restart winamp
but it works for me.
i will edit when i get home.

EDIT:
try this. right click on player, options>preferences.
Plugins>Output
click on direct sound output>configure
check allow hardware acceleration.
hit apply, OK
quit winamp and restart. see if that works
if not, i dont know.

Gistech - Thanks, that worked! We actually tried that (DirectSound + Hardware Acceleration), but we didn't restart Winamp - just the restarted the song.

Another problem surfaced though.. he says that sound disappears in games after around 30secs of play... I don't know much about that though so maybe I'll come back with more specific info..
