How to play .mkv files

Is there anyway to do this? I have a computer w/o hdmi (only vga), a dvd player with hdmi, an xbox 360 with a vga adapter / hdmi / component cables, and a 720p hd-tv.

Can someone tell me how to play these hd-files onto my tv without burning tons of dvds?
Right now, I'm watching 720p on my 14" laptop which isn't very impressive

Thanks

You're being very abstract. Do you only have a laptop, does the TV take VGA? Can't you just run a cable from the laptop to the TV?

Well, if your TV takes VGA you can just hook your computer up to it and use the TV as a monitor that way. If not, VGA->Component cables are cheap enough and work fine, so that's an option.

Another option would be to get something like the Popcorn Hour or iStar mini HD (www.istarhd.com) and hook that to your TV and stream files from USB or over your network.

Does the computer have DVI? If so run DVI -> HDMI to the tv and get a player like MPC-HC

If your computer cannot handle the content try getting a Cyberlink PowerDVD codec to go along with that and the Makostra Splitter
