How to play C&C3 with "connect to IP"

Hi, I have a couple friends who would like to play C&C3 together over the network (since going through the net through the EA servers the game becomes really slow).

Three of the computers are in the same room (and on the same LAN network), and it is easy to connect them through the "network" tab in the game. However, there is a forth computer elsewhere in the building and I can't get it to connect on even through wireless.

So the question is, can I do a "connect to server IP" to let the forth computer join the game? Thanks!

P.S. I think I am also join two LANs together, but is there a way to do it without expensive VPN routers?

Not sure if C&C 3 works with Hamachi - https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/

It creates a virtual LAN between clients through the internet..
