how to play avi files in osx?

my macbook wont play avi's quicktime launches but all i get is a white screen no sound or anything

any player i can use to watch or see? ive done the xvid codec, divx, media player, flip it but i cant get any video to show.

Download Perian and try again. If it still won't play then there is something weird with teh AVIs

Perian should do it but VLC is king.

I'd rank Quicktime for Mac higher then Windows Media Player on Windows.

I prefer MPlayerOSX: http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/

It is more efficient than VLC, especially for MKV x264 files.

get perian...then it should work with vlc and quicktime...thats what i use and it works fine for me.

Sometimes AVIs are encoded with weird codecs.
VLC is often the only thing that will play those; MPlayer is a good fallback option.

VLC had always worked for me.

Also used MPlayer, however I like some of the features in VLC so usually stick to that.
