How to pick a 23-24" monitor.

I need to replace a monitor in the house, and the sheer number of 23-24" 1080p monitors in the $150-$200 range is staggering.
Reviews, on any of them, end up like this:
75% "Dude, this monitor is awesome"
25% "The colors suck and it's too bright."

Is there a $150-$200 24" panel that is a known better-bet?

If I had to stretch to $250, is there a slam-dunk better option?

My uses: 40% web browsing, 25% Starcraft 2, 10% other games, 25% movies.

It really depends on how much you appreciate color saturation, viewing angles and overall picture quality. In general, you get what you pay for when it comes to LCD monitors. Ever wonder why some 24" monitors are under $200 bucks while others are well above $500? The main reason is panel technology. There are thousands of websites that talk about this, I recommend tftcentral.co.uk. They have great reviews on some of the nicer 24" monitors.

If you just want a big monitor than any of the ~$200 24" TN monitors will do just fine. Read reviews on Newegg or if you can, compare screens at a local store. Maybe I'm asking too much here, but somebody at Best Buy should know the difference between a TN panel and IPS panel (it's pretty obvious). Assuming BB even has an IPS panel for sale put them side by side and see if you can live with the TN panel for half the price. If you have an Apple store (shudder) nearby, go there and look at any panel, that's IPS (and Apple makes you pay for it too).

I had the same question. In the market for a new monitor, and I dont know where to look for reviews. I think I want an IPS panel, because I'm most concerned with viewing angle. Current monitor on the family desktop is an cheap Acer. Never again! You have to have the monitor adjusted at an exact angle while sitting right in front of it.. or everything looks as if it has black overlay.

Dell U2312hm (23" 1080p basic IPS) goes on sale for $199 fairly often, and the 24" U2412m (1920x1200 basic IPS) often hits $299 or $279.

Can't go wrong for your mix of uses, and you won't be pulling your hair out seeing brightness or colour vary every time you move just a bit.
