So I am pretty pale and would like to get a nice tan. Being in IT, I'd like to be methodical about how I go about it.

So,

What is a good plan of attack? Say: 15 mins a day on my lawn on each side daily, etc, etc

Cos yesterday when I went out sprinting I was out for only 40 mins and got my shoulders burned even though the sky was overcast...

if by pale you mean fair skinned, it's going to be pretty difficult to achieve a decent tan. many of these people are either white or burned, and not often anything in between.

my suggestion if it's something you really want? spray tan at a shop or self tanner out of a store.

but yeah, do 20-30 mins on each side of your body on sunny days. doesn't have to be every day.

1. Your shoulders are going to burn if you run for 40 minutes in the sun regardless of what your complexion is. Wear sunblock.
2. I don't think 15 minutes a day is enough time to make any difference, I did that last year and it didn't do much. It probably also depends on the area and exposure level. For instance, I was out in the sun for 3 hours w/out sunblock this weekend and got slightly burnt, but not enough to peel and actually managed to get some decent color from it.
3. Moisturize, you don't want any color that you get to peel off.
4. If you do lie outside a lot, cover your face/neck some because it probably doesn't need as much sun as the rest of you.

And remember, you can tan on an overcast day, as you learned running, and this is actually easier than doing it in the scorching heat. Although it can be a bit more deceptive and dangerous. But also a lot more comfortable.

Do like 5-10 minutes, the first day, 10-15 minutes the second day, etc. You have to build it up. If you do this, you will develop some color. Don't overdo it.

And yes, there's a cancer risk.

The tan look is overrated. Just spend less time indoors on the computer on nice days.

Trying to methodolical with your tanning regime and NOT using indoor tanning beds is difficult. If you don't tan easy, you need to follow a pretty strict schedule to get a good tan. Depending on the weather is going to make that much more difficult.

How about just don't, very rarely have I seen a good tan.
And if I actually do see someone with a good tan, it often isn't from anything other then being born with skin like that.
(read they could get minimal sun and still have that tanned look)

What are you people smoking? A person with a tan looks WAY better than the same person without one, even if it's an obvious tanning bed tan. Skin just looks better when it is beige or light brown in color, rather than the sickly yellowish look of untanned skin.

OP, I'd start with 15 minutes a day as you suggest unless you have unusually sensitive skin. That wouldn't be enough for me to burn. You may want to double that time after the first week or so.

Just go on vacation for a week and get a base tan and just upkeep it with a couple hours a week during the summer.

Just do some walking around the town without a shirt on. I inadvertently tan every summer cause I walk a lot, half an hour to an hour at a day at times. Unfortunately, I don't go parading my bare chest around, so I get a farmer tan with racoon eyes.

Untanned skin doesn't look sickly yellowish for anyone I have ever known ever.
And tanning bed tans tend to look horrible.
