65k - 35k = 30k to live on i think most people get by on that just fine so way should other people pay for your college

65k, by the time the government takes their cut and the health insurance comes out and the 401k contribution goes in and the parking and life insurance comes out = about 3k/month (4 weeks).. bit more, so about 40k/year. it's not all that difficult to support a family of 4 on 40k if you live in the right place, but no matter where you live it's kinda hard to do so while you're payin' 35k/year tuition.

fafsa would indicate some assistance should be available at that level, they'll estimate your family contribution towards your education should be something less than 10k/year, somewhere near that, given this hypothetical income. that's approximately the situation we're in at the moment (our income varies year to year depending on the economy.. but.. that's in the neighborhood of what this year's fafsa looked like), except for the paying thing.. my daughter has scholarships that cover her tuition, room, board, books, and leave a little pocket money left over.. there was a lot more left over last year.. but costs have increased. she's been offered a job she'd like to accept, but she has to be eligible for work study to do so, and her cost of attendence vs. our expected contribution would make her eligible but her scholarships eliminate the possibility. but.. that's ok.. please don't think I'm complaining!

you can't get work study even if you want to do that, if you don't qualify for financial aid, work study is a form of financial aid.. so that's moot. the only choices are apply for and win more scholarships, take out loans, find another source of income (you get a job, parent gets second job, non-working parent gets job, something along those lines) to produce the shortfall, or choosing a less expensive school.

it's not that people aren't trying to be helpful.. those really are all the options there are.

I hate how FAFSA assumes you get help from your parents.. fvcking sucks cause I get no financial help except for a government loan of $3k because of that.. :|

I'm pulling $15k a year in loans.. not fun. :(

I'm not really too sure here, but I think the example was about his folks making 65K.
I'll go back and read the post again.

That's about the gist of it.

I'll add that public colleges and universities always give you more for your education dollar, especially if you meet residency requirements. My first two years of college put together will cost less than $5,000, and then it's off to the U of M Institute of Technology (that's University of Minnesota) for not much more to finish the degree.

I'm not sure if this has been said already, but you could join The Reserves, I think they'll pay for part, or all of your schooling. Or you can do this thing with the military where they pay for school, everything, but then you have to join the army/navy/air force for 5 years.

There are scholarship sites like FastWeb that provide a database of scholarships available that you qualify for. Many of the really big ones are need based, but there are a lot smaller ones (~$500-$2000) that may fit you well. Also try your town, as they keep track of a list of scholarships, and there may be one for students who go from your high school to that college. I know someone who paid her way into Harvard by building up these types of sholarships, so it is definitely possible.
