How to patch Bad Company 2?!?

So I finally bought this game on sale at Amazon - installed it and it patches automatically at startup. I let it go for a while and eventually it fails, saying it can't find some file. I also have no idea where I can reliably download the 2.4GB patch online.

How do I get this patched up so I can play?

What file does it say it can't find?

It doesn't say. I'm going to try uninstalling and downloading through EA Origin, hoping that it will just download a patched version. I downloaded through Amazon in the first place.

Check in your game's installation directory, taking my own as the example:

Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Battlefield Bad Company 2

If you have it on Steam then obviously just check in your "steamapps" folder where it was installed. Look for the "BFBC2Updater" .exe file. Execute it, and a window will open up, it'll check the game's version, and if it isn't up-to-date then it will be automatically updated. If it's already up-to-date then the game will launch automatically.

If it's up-to-date but still ends up closing or you can't play then the missing file(s) are most likely related to Punkbuster, in which case I would recommend looking for the Punkbuster "updater", namely "PBSetup", an executable, here is the link to its web-page: http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php

Once the PBSetup's window opens up you simply have to browse your folder and find the game's own executable, and then proceed to check the Punkbuster version that happens to be installed along the game, if any. If it's not up-to-date then it will automatically update it (and that's a vital part anyway, since if Punkbuster isn't up-to-date even if the rest of the game's files are then you will be kicked out of Punkbuster-protected servers on-line).

Hope it helps.

EDIT: Oh, you have the game from EA's Origin... may God enlighten your path, for you will need guidance through the ordeals to come. I do hope that at least they kept that auto updater executable in the game's installation folder from the digital version from Origin, if not, and if even Punkbuster cannot be updated the "good ol' way" from that PBSetup then it's completely out of my grasp to bring any sort of help, sorry, if that's the case.

^I didn't have the game from Origin, I bought it on sale from Amazon downloads. The Amazon one didn't update or work right, but so far after getting it from Origin it works fine!

And actually when I put the key into Origin, it asked if I wanted BFBC2 or BFBC2: Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes the Vietnam expansion. Obviously I picked the deluxe edition, and just finished downloading the 9GB of game data. Ran it once to check if it worked, and afterwards ended up moving the entire game from "Origin Games" to "Electronic Arts" in my Program Files folder, and then uninstalled Origin since I don't want that crap on my computer, still works fine.

Fully patched BFBC2 + Vietnam for $7.50, not too bad :)

LOL@ "don't want that crap on my computer" when "that crap" is exactly what fixed your problem

If you don't want to use Origin then you should just not use it. It's not running in the background at all times if you tell it not to, and it'll autopatch anything you try to launch from it. Just to have it around for patching purposes makes sense... given that this whole headache of yours involves patching. Run it once in a while or when you know there's a new patch out. I agree it's not a good program for much, but given your specific issue I'd just leave it installed.

I personally could never get BFBC2 to run right, and it appears I'm hardly the only one. It's pretty buggy, especially considering how long it's been out.
