how to partition my 120gig HD ...

ok, i am getting my new PC parts in the mail soon. I want to divide my WD1200JB into 2 partitions:

20 gig -- system
100 gig -- games, apps, etc

Now, what do I do? When installing XP will it ask me if i want to partition the drives? Or do i partition them beforehand? Also should i have both NTFS or the system NTFS and the other FAT32....

also, how likely is a harddrive crash?

Bare in mind that the bigger the harddisk is, the longer it takes to format and defrag. I would do 40Gb x 3.

How likely is a hdd to die?? Not too sure but avoid IBM at all cost. 🙂

I also have a 120gb but my setup is different as I have 2 hds. The best way I would think is 3 partitions. 20gb for a system partition is overkill.
I usually make my system partitions 3gb maybe more if needed but not much more. Another partition (up to you how you size it but 20gb should be heaps) can be your installed games/apps etc. The last just uses the remaining space as archives, movies, backup for when you reinstall (this last is important as it allows you to completely format the first two partitions and keep all your data. This is my personal preference for layout but then I also have 40gb of mp3s on the hard drive 🙂

After you install, you should set your page files. Take the one off the system partition and put it either on the games or archive partition. Just helps to conserve space used on the system partition and is more efficient use of your space. Plus you can make the page file huge if you wish and not worry about the limitations of the system drive.

EDIT: Defrag and format is not really a worry with the drive I have (WD1200JB) if you defrag regularly (I defrag once a week late at night). If you're worried about failure, steer clear of IBM but the WDs seem to be fine.

Just to make you jealous, my WD12000JB has:

4GB FreeBSD 4.6
1GB RESERVED for QNX (install won't see drive from Promise controller 🙁, but runs from CD fine)
1GB Windows FAT16 C:
50MBLinux /boot
1.5GB RESERVED for BeOS (doesn't like post-Tbird Athlons "out of the box" 🙁)
1.5GB RESERVED for anything else
3GB WinXP NTFS D:
4GB Win2K NTFS D:
2GB Personal Files NTFS P:
2GB WinME FAT32 D:
4GB Linux /
1GB Linux /home
128MB Linux swap
15GB Windows Games E:
40GB FAT32 MP3s (>75% full, I'm afraid)
30GB FAT32 Archive (all my downloads)

Tweak a few of those numbers to use 120GB. Everything boos via NT Loader. 🙂
