I am new to the Intel i875 chipset. I tried to overclock just by changing the FSB speeds, but my computer crashes. What do I do with the ram settings? What about the ram divider?

My cpu is from the philipines, so I am not sure it will overclock very well. How do I go about trying to overclock to around 3.2Ghz??

First, what kind of ram do you have??? PC what???...

3.2ghz will take with the 2.6c's 13 multiplier just shy of 250fsb. Unless you have pc4200(500mhz ddr) stuff you cannot run at 1:1 ratio...YOu should set it to 5:4 ratio if you have pc3200 or less. At 250fsb with the 5;4 ratio this would be 200x2 or 400mhz ddr. Set cas timings do non-aggressive cas 2.5 for right now. Tweak memory last when trying to find the limit oif the cpu....

I would take it in 10fsb jumps at first and each time boot into windows run a few things and then prime for 1 hour and memtest one pass all test. Then restart and and jump another 10fsb. When you can't pass prime then bump the vcore up in .025 notches until you do. When ram starts to error or get over its designed pseed boost the vdimm up as well....Hell just set it at 2.7v right off the bat and the vagp to 1.6v so you don't have to worry about it....Keep going until you hit 1.65v max on the vcore...

i can't get it to run at 3250mhz. at default, the highest i can get is 242x13=3147mhz with 5:4 mem divider. maybe i can get it up to 250fsb with a little voltage

what is your game acceleration on? mine is on auto. F1 only works when mem divider is on 1:1 right?

I don't have the board but I am familiar with the problems many have had plus the problems most ppl have when ocing the system...

Leave it at 5:4 auto for right now and then yes bump the vcore up...Usually with these4 chips from when it starts needing more vcore to that 1.65v max (actual vcore) you may only get 100-150mhz more....3.25ghz seems within range. Tweak memory later....

I have the Max II, the same CPU and similar RAM.

If you want an overclock like mine, the settings are very simple:
Go into the softmenu in BIOS and make these settings:
CPU Operating speed "User Defined"
Ext Clock "250/66/33"
N/B Strap "PSB800"
DRAM Ratio "5:4"
AGP Ratio "Fixed"
Fixed AGP/PCI Freq "66/33"

CPU Power Supply "Default"

I have not changed any voltages or memory timings.
DRAM settings are by "SPD"

Game Acceleration is "Auto"

Why did you use N/B Strap "PSB800"? I use default. What is your batch code, where it was made, etc? I am guessing you have a better cpu.

Talk to Thugsrook if you want a better understanding of the abit bios and its NB options....I am sure it will help you immensely!!!

CPU Power Supply - try 1.6
VDimm (memory voltage) = "2.8"
ram timings manual. Start with slowest (highest values), then tweak them later on once you have the CPU stable.

Heh, I must confess to being a neophyte overclocker and don't recall where or why I got the idea for PSB800.
When I first got my Max II mobo, I followed the stickied IC7 thread regularly, so I probably got the advice there.
All I know is that these settings are working well for me.

I don't want to take my Zalman off to see the batch code on the CPU, but I do recall that it is a Phillipino product.

Looks like I chucked the box, all I have left is the plastic case in which I stored the original retail HSF.

Try my settings and let us know how it works.

will not run 3250 no matter what

POST ok, but error in windows

i think i may have a issue with my audigy 2. does anyone have conflicts in their system with audigy 2? i can't even install the update drivers, it just crashes.

hytek369, did you back out the RAM timings to the slowest ones as advised? If not, try that, because your rev 1.1 PC3200LL modules are probably asking the mobo for 2-2-2-6 timings that the mobo doesn't run well. Try 2.5-3-3-8 @ 2.8V perhaps.

That is extremely aggressive and contrary to what many here advise...When trying to oc a cpu take the ram out of the equation...I would be running cas 2.5,3,3,7 at least right now at 2.7v (very safe) until I get limited by the cpu itself...

I highly doubt it is the audigy as if you locked the agp/pci as advised up above there should be no issue....Are you getting a blue screen right at splash???? If you want to rule it out, take it out for now....Otherwise even try another pci slot in case you think you are having irq conflicts. I do remember the audigy is a resource hog and will not like to share with anything...

Well there's your problem, most likely. :p Go to 2.5-3-3-8 @ 2.8V and crank up your OC. It's a known preference of your board's chipset that it just isn't happy with the super-tight timings, but humor it and you may get back a large OC dividend.

thanks guys, i need to try that. i didn't think ram settings would be the problem since i can run 2-2-2-5 at 200mhz no problems on my amd system. since after the 5:4 mem divider, i will be running under 200mhz, it should be ok.

anyway, windows would crash at splash screen. i get a blue screen and tells me there is an error.

let me lower my memory timings. i hope this works

definitely do try...It may not help but I have seen stranger things...My pc3000 corsair would not even do over 400mhz on my epox 4bda mobo no matter the vdimm or timings....My albatron lets me run 410mhz at cas 2,2,3,5 and 450mhz at cas 2.5,3,3,7....MObos can differ greatly...

Also remember with these P4 boads the northbridge gets its power from the vagp so make sure that is at least 1.6v to 1.7v...

You raised the vagp to 1.6 and 1.7v?? You tried raising the vdimm 2.7v and 2.8v???

yes, i raised the voltages for vagp, vdimm, vcore. i just have instabilities with windows. i still think it is the damn audigy2 card. what slot should i put it in? i have it in pci5 and pci4 so far without luck.

consult your mobo manual and in there they should provide a diagram of theslots and what and if they share addresses with any other devices...Do you have usb devices??? I had problems with my older epox 4bda mobo wanting to put the usb controllers with my audigy. I had to fins the slot the shared with no one or an empty pci slot I was not using.

1) Try all pci slots

2)disable usb controllers temporarily if you are using them

3)disable any onboard stuff.

4) look for the options that lets you have more control in setting the devices individually in windows...NOt sure where it is in the bios and if you are running winxp or not...
