Is that a slot 1 Katmai Pentium III 500 or a FCPGA Coppermine Pentium III 500. It makes a difference. The former does not have very much overclocking potiential and runs hotter. The Coppermine by contrast should give you a 133% overclock. I have the FCPGA Coppermine PIII 550E for example and I could easily get 733 mhz out of it... probably more. The Katmai won't give you much at all.

To over clock, don't mess with the CMOS values, but yes, in the BIOS you can change your Front Side Bus (FSB) speed from 100 to 133 mhz and that will force your CPU from 500 to 666 mhz. That is of course assuming you have a Coppermine type. If it is the Katmai, you will need to find the settings in your BIOS which allow smaller increments and creep up the FSB a little at a time to see what it will handle and be stable.

how do i tell if its either one of the chips?
and when im in the BIOS, i can't find anyting for the FSB, only thing i see is under bios features that says CPU internal core speed: 500mHz, and there's no option to up the FSB and its whited out so i can't do anything
i have a ASUS CU4V-LS motherboard with award BiOS i think

bump
i looked inside and there's this black thing around the CPU (heatsink, but i think its really huge), so i can't really tell...
i think there are jumper settings (im not quite sure what they should look like) but there is a set of 3 pins with a blue thing over 2 of them and over to the left there's a setting that shows a bunch of different FSBs (i think) so if i overclock, do i need to do that? (and how would i go about changing it, it says something like
#1 #2 #3
1-2 1-2 1-2 100mhz
2-3 2-3 2-3 66mHz
1-2 2-3 1-2 112mHz

and can i use softFSB to overclock? although i don't think it supports XP Pro
thanks
