how to overclock & can i overclock?

hi, i have a sony vaio PCV-RX202, its quite an old model about 3 years old.

Computer specs:

1.8ghz P4 CPU
64mb Geforce2Ti Graphics card
80gb HDD
512mb RAM ( upgraded from 256mb )
CD Writer
DVD Rom
Exernal DVD Writer
Windows XP Home Edition

i want to know if it is possible to overclock my cpu.

i dont know how to check if it is possible to overclock.

please help me figure out how to overclock my PC.

Most PC's that you buy from a manufacturer such as dell, or sony, can't be overclocked. They have very limited bios options. It might be possible to use clockgen, but you are gonna have to be a lot more speciific about your hardware first.

Is the P4 a northwood(512k cache) or a williamette(256k cache). 1.8 northwoods typicaly hit 2.4ghz pretty easily, williamettes..well they are just utter crap.

You'll need to know the exact model of your motherboard.

You need to be a lot more specific about the ram too, could be SDRAM, RDRAM, or DDR, and then need to know what speed the ram is as well.

to find out that info, you are going to need Everest Home Edition. i think you can get it somewhere nowadays.

my motherboard: Asus P4B266-LM

my cpu: P68, Willamette, A80528

it is DDR SDRAM

what else do you need?

I have a dell and I went into the BIOS and it doesn't have any bios options for overclocking. I have something similar to his rig. It's just worse lol. Can I overclock it in windows? any programs?

it's a williamette p4 100FSB x18(multi), Bus Speed 398.8, Family:F, Model:1, Stepping 2, ext.model: 0, revision D0, and my memory is RDRAM >.<. Just wondering if I would even be able to overclock in windows. It's old and hopefully I'll get a new one when AM2 comes out.

Williamettes don't overclock worth a crap, so you're really not going to get anything more out of it. It's an OEM board, so there are no gurantees since there isn't much information about it, but it appears to support up to a 400mhz FSB 2.4ghz P4 with bios version 1004. Clockgen may work, but we'll need to know what speed your ram is and what speed it's currently running at. CPUz should tell you that, as well as verify your CPU is a williamette core.

Hey!!! Wait a second! I got Willy 1.5@2.1 on my second rig and to my calculation that is 40% increase over stock. That's not bad right?

OP-Just transfer everything onto a new board.

The question is, is your ram running at 133mhz, or is it running at 100mhz. If it's just running at 100mhz, and you can find a version of clockgen that works, you can go to 133mhz FSB without worrying about overclocking the ram.

It will tell you what you are running.

My wildest guess would be 100Mhz since your CPU is 400FSB (100Mhz Quad Pumped).

Unfortunately, your OEM made BIOS won't be able to let you overclock. The computer wasn't designed for enthusiast like the one in you. You better off saving up some $$ to buy you a new motherboard that is capable of doing so than wishing something that you can't.

I'm not sure if ClockGen might be able to do it or not but you might want to give it a try.

your second option would be to find out from CPU-Z whether you have socket 423 or 478. If you have the former, you're out of luck but on the latter there are some cheaper motherboards out there that runs on dual channel DDR that will let you overclock some...but not by much. At least it would do 133FSB with little or no voltage increase. Just multiply that with 18 and see how much you'll be getting.

ok thanks alot guys

i tried clockgen, i put it to 2.0 ghz and nothing happen, tried with 2.5 and even 3.0 and still nothing happend. i put it to the max 7.0 ghz and my computer started beeping and froze so i swithced it off by pulling the plug out.

is there any damage caused?

this was a few days ago and currenty i see no difference

Did you try to match your motherboard to the Clockgen like we ask you to? No.

If your computer is still working, you are lucky.

Next time, NEVER EVER PULL THE POWER CORD IN THE BACK WHEN THE COMPUTER FROZE. Hold the power button and it will shut down for you.

If you don't know, ask.

When all else fails clock it to 7 ghz. lol. Thats the solution to all of lifes problems.

You can but you probably not much, say 2ghz. I am able to get 1.8ghz out of my 1.6ghz P4 and very pleased.

That is not true at all - I always ran my old 1.6 @ 1.92 without any issues, and I'm sure it would have gone higher but the stock HS on it was crappy and I couldn't be bothered to get a better one.
