K, I currenly have only a box of parts, and I plan to assemble this system this weekend. After I get it running at 1.6, I would love to know how to actually overclock it.

Where to I start?
What can I expect to run it at with 100% stability?
What testing software do I use?

Part List:

Asus P4S333 SiS645
512MM Samsung PC2700
Intel 1.6a
IBM Deskstar 120GXP 80GB
Asus V8200T2 GF3 Ti200 64MB
Antec 330W

Thanks for your help

whoa newbie 1 Q at a time ;)

ok heres how to get started....

run @ 1600mhz w/a 3:5 memory ratio to start and make sure everything is running stable.
(3dmark2k or 3dmark2k1 should do)
after youre sure its running fine - change the cpu setting to 2133mhz / 133fsb and the memory ratio 4:5.
if it crashes, raise the cpu voltage .05v at time until its stable.

if the system doesnt boot at all - use the voltage booster jumper on the top left corner of the board and try again.

:)

Pardon me...*n00b alert*

Everything seems to be running stable from the first step...Wondering, where to next?

Thanks! :)

step 2) in the bios change the cpu setting to 2133mhz and the memory ratio 4:5.
if it crashes, raise the cpu voltage .05v at time until its stable.

my bad...got the cpu set to 2133mhz and memory ratio at 4:5...so far so good i guess

step 3) in the bios change the FSB setting to 140fsb (2240mhz) and leave the memory ratio @ 4:5.
if it crashes, raise the cpu voltage .05v at time until its stable.

Thugsrook,

Do you have to unlock anything when ordering the 1.6a? like on the athlons? Also which mobo/chipset is best to this chip right now? Should I go rambus or ddr? Good god you had ome swwet OC's in your thread.

<<<< P4 noob.

There is no unlocking necesary for the P4 since the multiplier is hardlocked inside the core. The overclocking for the P4 is done through FSB so there is no need for a multiplier unlock. The same goes for the XP, if you only overclock by FSB you don't have to unlock that either. The advantage to unlocking the multiplier is to lower it so you can ramp up the FSB higher for better overall system performance.

Carbonyl no unlocking needed - its a FSB overclock only.
for a maximum ooverclock (over 160fsb) we are using i845D motherboards.
i use an Asus P4B266-C board.
they also just released the P4B533 boards - a bit more expensive tho.

AWESOME! This has to be the new celeron 400 pitted with a P2B deal of 2002!

Which HS offers great cooling for around $20? And which ram do you need? pc 2100, 2400, 2700, 3000 or 3200? and should it be cas 2 or 2.5?

Thanks

$20 probably won't get you anything good for a cooler...stick with stock and apply AC3
As for mem goes...get the higher rated ones...all of the list should be fine...but you want to get to Thugsrook's speed...get at least pc2700 corsair/original samsung/mushkin etc...cas 2 really give you a little boost in performance...not really noticable...cas 2.5 is just a more stable setting...

Alrighty...think I'm gettin the hang of this..hehe
Everything ran smooth at 2133/133mhz/4:5...tested with prime95 overnight...approx 24hrs
Feeling a little brave now so dunno if I'm gettin ahead of myself but tried jumping to:
fsb: 145mhz
mem: 4:5
vcore: 1.50V
also flashed the bios to 1006c
So far things seem to be running pretty good...although, mbm5 is showing 51c for cpu, but its been that way since I first ran mbm...dunno if its actually an issue with mbm configs or cpu...hmm? Anyways, wondering if there's anything I might wanna look out for while I shoot for 150...??

much appreciation and thanks...good lookin out! :D

Hooked up ASUS PC Probe v2.16.07 to monitor temps instead...showing cpu at 32c/89f and mobo at 44c/111f :)

Well...tested at 145 fsb for approx 24 hrs with prime95...everything still stable...just took the next step to 150 fsb...keepin vcore at 1.525 and mem 4:5.
see how this goes for the next 24 hrs...*fingerscrossed*

ps: anything I might wanna look out for or try?

update: woops...prime crashed a little after starting...upped vcore to 1.575...this the right way of trying to oc?

Hmmm...well...so here's where I'm at: everything's good to go at 150mhz, so I tried goin a little further to 155. System immediately blue-screened becuz of "improper frequency combination." Not sure what to adjust or go from here. Is this error due to the mem freq ratio of 4:5? Only other options are 4:3 and 1:1. Vcore is at 1.575. I'm kewl with 2.4ghz, but just would like to see how far this chip will go. Any help appreciated. TIA! :)

Its very possible you may ahve simply just maxed out on that chip...its really luck of the draw past 150 fsb or funky bios settings. I'm getting my first 1.6a using the Abit IT& board running on the 845e chipset this week so I don't have any advice yet myself in this situation.

But, as I said, you may just be at the chip's limit :)

Well, I think it'd be best to set the mem divider at 1:1 for now, so if you do get a failed boot you know it's not a memory problem.

If you do take my advice and you can load at a 1:1 mem divider but not at a 4:5 just change your vmem jumper (found almost directly right from your far right RAM slot) check your owners manual, but I'm fairly certain that the jumper needs to be moved into the center of the 4 pins so it's like this -__- with the underscores marking where the jumper is.

Other than that, thugsrook's right on. Just keep an eye on the temps, too. :)

exactly!
if youve hit a limit and not sure what it is - drop your memory ratio down to 1:1. if that fixes your problem than its your mem thats maxed out.
if youre only using pc2100 may as well just start in 1:1 mode.

HTH :)
