How to organize PDF's

I have a growing colleciton of scientific journal articles in pdf format and I'm looking for a solution to organize/tag them so that they can be easily browsed and accessed. Currently I name them by author, year, and a few key words, but as the collection gets larger it becomes more and more cumbersome accessing them. Google desktop works well if I know the author whose article I want to find, but it doesn't work so well when I can't recall the author.

It would be nice if there were a way to browse through the files by looking at a thumbnail which contained the author, title, and abstract (even a thumbnail of the title page would work). I haven't had much luck locating a program that will do this sort of thing. Anyone have any suggestions?

It would be slick if iTunes added a pdf organizing feature similar to the way you are able to scroll through your library now via album covers. It would be nice if you could scroll through thumbnails of title pages and have the titel, author, and abstract show up in text below the thumbnail image (i.e. where the album's songs are). I have to imagine there's a market for this type of thing...
