I was playing Rogue Spear with my roomate (only 2 player) and it was somewhat laggy...

we both using win98se, one is Tbird 800 the other is Cele366@550, one with a Netgear 10/100 nic and the other Realtek 10/100. however, the hub is Netgear's 10mbit hub, could that be the problem?
but still, with 5mbit bandwidth each it should be sufficient enough for rogue spear....
could it be other reasons....

Your Nic cards and hub shouldnt be a problem here. Unless one of them are going bad some how and looseing packets in some way. Can you ping each of the computers with out loosing packets? Also try playing another game on the lan and see if you get any lag. It might just be the game Rogue Spear, do you have the newest patchs for the game installed? Also check all your cables and make sure thier plugged in good.

Rougue spear had done that to me and my friend also. I think it has crappy LAN code, cause UT, Q3A etc. have never done that.

hrmm...I was just saying that I have seen the same problem on the same game, although not on the same LAN with other games.

Beaconing ethernet cards hog the networks bandwidth. Another potential problem is autoswitching between people with unlike speed settings; the switch latency is horrendus.
