I have known this trick for a very long time, but I use my thumb as the fulcrum instead of index finger. Also, it doesn't have to be a Bic lighter.

I always have my keys, so I always have my bottle opener....

I do know of other ways to open them just in case though, plus I can't see having a lighter and not my keys, so this trick doesn't really help

That's why you use a bic. The plastic they are made of is slightly soft, and won't crack.

I've seen a friend split open a cheap hard plastic lighter before trying to open a stubborn bottle. It was a big poof of expanding butane, but no flame.
