Why would you, as a little (?) child, as you say, be at some point so scared and frightened that you are convinced you need "salvation" and must confess all your sins to god/jesus? It sounds to me like you were scared and feared for your life/soul....AS A LITTLE CHILD.... and the only explanation I have is that someone traumatized you and made you believe this being the case. This is not "normal" by a long-shot, not for a little kid.
Do you THINK that god intended this to be...that even immature children need to recognize and confess their sins (whatever they are)? In how far would this make sense?
Thinking about what drove you wanting "to obtain salvation" as a little child, to me, is the actual interesting part here...
I realize that's at least a little rhetorical, but it's actually pretty straightforward. Little kids believe whatever they're taught, unless they're constantly and obviously lied to, and sometimes still even then.
When a kid constantly hears about powerful lifechanging conversions and how their parents' religion is the most important thing ever, it's only a matter of time. Even kids raised in the church that have never known anything else will at one point or another have a "conversion" event like they've always heard about, they'll get serious and optionally talk with a parent or religious leader before praying something probably adlibbed but still cliche, something about consciously accepting Jesus into their heart, again even though they have no idea what life outside the bubble they're pledging themself to is like. That's what it's like to grow up evangelical; you've no life experience of your own because you're seven, so you just do the best with what you're told and what you're told is to be a protaganist in a Chick tract.
