HOw to network 2 computer each w/ a wireless card

I have a desktop with a wireless nic, and a laptop with a built-in nic
....I don't have a wireless router.
All i want to do is network the 2computers (just like u would with a network cable, but this is wireless)
Is it possible?

So you're saying your laptop has a built-in wireless NIC? If so you can network them together without a wireless router by putting the wireless NICs into ad-hoc mode.

I set both my desktop and my laptop to adhoc mode.
But in the "available wireless network" dialog, I don't see my laptop or desktop's nic.

I am a newbie to this, please explain more in details of how can I network 2 computers with wireless card and no router

Do they both have the same SSID set? First set up the network without any sort of protection (no password, turn off firewalls) or encryption, once that works, then turn on WPA and a password.

And are they both using XP with SP2?
