Ya, I'm sure the answer is going to be for a newborn baby but I'm done fighting these machines.

Long story short.......going from WinXP machines to Win7 & *I* get to do the migration. All else swapped easily enough w/ easy-transfer but I'm about to tell everybody here that their old e-mails are gone & to just deal with it.

Eudora 7.1 (I also tried the OSE version 1 but no-joy so sticking w/ the last old 7.1. And no, I don't know why my boss wants us using Eudora, but it is what it is & I can't change it)

TIA

OK - you are in my wheelhouse. I keep on using Eudora in XP, Win 7 and now 8.1. Never foun d a better mail manager.

I have it installed on all systems. In the Eudora folder, you will find files relating to your mail boxes. They are folders. Each consists of 2 file, a .TOC and a .MBX. Each has the name of the mailbox or folder. Example, in.toc and in.mbx. One is the data and the other the table of contents.

So, all you need to do is copy the pair of files for each of your mailbox and put them in the Eudora folder of your new PC.

This is one of the reasons I love Eudora. All of the operational files can be edited. It can be run from an external drive, a disk, a thumbdrive, etc.

When I travel, I have Eudora on my laptop. All email gets put into a folder called "TRIP." When I get home, I copy TRIP.TOC and TRIP.MBX to my home desktop's Eudora, and then use the transfer function to put each message in its normal mailbox.

Your boss is a wise person. :)

Just an added thought. Every person files email differently. Yeah - there's the out box, in box, and then in a business you could have a box named for every client or account. You really don't need to "migrate" Eudora. If the drive letters stay the same, then just copy the entire Eudora Directory/Folder and paste it into the new computer. If you do that for each person, their email should be just as they left it on the old machine. :)

Thanks, Corky!! Ya, I actually found some help here......

http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1602hq.html

......shortly after I posted. It didn't make sense the first time, but then I re-read it slowly & figured out they want the files you pull from AppData (yes, it's hidden & I had to expose first) and but don't put it back in a new AppData directory folder but instead put it into the directory where you actually INSTALL the program. Then the dll's take care of the point backs.

To compound that I was worried I'd screw things up between Win7 Pro's "Program Files (x86)" and regular "Program Files" directory but it works fine either way.

Only problem I'm having now (I'm at home now so can't say I remember for sure) but when I close Eudora on the new PC, it gives errors......something to the affect of:

"Qualcomm\search.tmp file error
(c17) file already exists"

I don't really know what that's about since I've completely cleaned out all directories more than once to ensure it's a clean install but the program does work.

Any suggestions there much appreciated too!

I have the exact same version of Eudora Pro on 4 different PCs. I didn't have to install it except on one. Then I copied the entire folder and sub folders to the other system and created links. As long as the drive letters were the same, I didn't have to edit the .INI file. The program can actually run from a CD.

Hey Corky,

As I'm making my computer the last to move/merge in this process, I was looking at my mailboxes & noticed something strange. As of 2 days ago, I'm missing all of my outbox e-mail between 6/18/14 and 8/12/13. It is nowhere to be found.

Only thing strange about my setup that I'm aware of is that where the "About Eudora" pop up shows the directories where Data & AppData are stored, mine is not the same as everybody else's.

Instead of ------> "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora"

Mine's in ------> "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application"

I don't even know how that happened but I'll assume it's been that way since 2010 cuz that's how far back I have my other e-mails in the outbox. Just that gap above is missing.

Any suggestions for where I could look for 'em???

P.S. My Inbox & Trash are all there, unaffected.

I couldn't get it to run on Win 7 and resorted to using the OSE version. You've inspired me to try loading it again.

AFAIK, all Eudora files are in the Eudora7 folder, and that can be on any drive you choose. I keep m,ine on a RAID1 array labeled "J" drive. I have never used C:\Documents etc. for anything. I have always found it too "microsoftish."

Have you tried a search for any relevant filename? Could those emails out have been deleted? Also, could they have neen placed in a different mailbox? If you delve into /Eudora7, are there possibly more than one OUT.TOC and OUT.MBX? IOW, a numbered one, like out1.mbx, etc. Be sure and check all Eudora mailboxes - I have over 20.

I reinstalled Eudora into a new folder outside of the program files folder and now it works fine. It wouldn't allow access to a couple files while it lived in the program files folder. The file system wouldn't let me change the permissions even as admin* but now it works. :)

* Nothing makes me want to rip open a hard drive and take a pin to a file sector like being told I don't have permission when I'm admin.

Interesting. I'll definitely take a look. I don't remember deleting anything but I'll see. Of course, they're not in the trash folder either so I'm still suspect of something weird having happened.

LOL.........That's hilarious, and yes, I agree............many a time I'd have loved to hold a flame to Winx's file manager for a number of reasons & permissions being one of them! ;)

Corky,

In answer to your mailbox question, I am finding multiple outboxes in Eudora like this........

out (Eudora mailbox created 6/27/14)
out.mbx001 (created 6/18/2014 <---- curiously, last date I have in my outbox before jumping to 8/12/13
out.mbx002 (created 3/13/2014)

and

out.toc (modified 6/30/2014) makes sense
out.toc001 (modified 6/18/2014) <---- again last date I have in my outbox before jumping to 8/12/13....hmmmmm
out.toc002 (created 3/13/2013)

I downloaded an "undelete" program, but not sure exactly what to tell it to look for and perhaps the answer is right here in one of these folders???

TIA.....again!

Those files do match, and together they allow the program to open a mailbox. The OUT box only has email sent out. It is automatic. It is possible to merge them together, but that doesn't seem to be related.

If the user deleted sent mail in the OUT box, chances are it is gone forever. I keep all my mail files for about a year before deleting. My OUT box has all files back to 1 Jan 2009! :)

Trying to transfer my Eudora archives to a new computer. Both are Windows 7. My Eudora version is Eudora 8.0b6

Both Eudora 7 and Eudora 8 are installed on my computer. I haven't used 7 in years.

I've read the previous posts here, and looked at the U of Iowa site.

I can't locate the Eudora 8 data files...Eudora.ini, in.mbx, etc. I search for eudora.ini and am taken to Eudora 7. I go to C:>users>user>appdata>eudora and I an taken to Eudora 7. C:>program files>eudora takes me to eudora 7. C:>program files (x86)>eudora takes me to my Eudora 8 files. Eudora.exe has my archives.

But no .toc, .mbx, .ini files

I've tries dragging the eudora folder in program files (x86) to the same folder on my new computer, and of course that doesn't work.

So first question...Where are my Eudora 8 files located. I've searched for *.ini and can only locate Eudora 7.

Bear with me, I'm just learning....

I can't answer your question unfortunately, but this is why I am so glad that I have switched to IMAP. Now all I have to do on a new machine is put in the server information, user information, and BAM!, all the email is pulled from the server to any device.

If you ISP offers it, I would recommend moving your email over. Will be a great help for years to come.

Hi Guys. Not sure I also can assist here, although, having said that, I too am experiencing a problem whilst transferring my messages from and older to a newer laptop. I'm transferring messages to a newer laptop and all messages are being transferred appropriately to this newer (mac) laptop. Only (minor) poblem is they are all being marked as "Unread" messages (ie "starred") even those from a few years ago, and that have been read. Can I group all the transferred messages together and, somehow, "Mark as read" for the entire group of (around) 1900 messages?? One at a time would be ...... impractical. Thanks for any suggestion. Alex

Hello Sir,

Are you still using Eudora? You sound like you have a great deal of experience. I could use some help.
