Do you have a GPS? Just check the box for "avoid tolls roads" or whatever it is.

Past life experience tells me that taking that longer "free" route costs about the same in fuel (+/-, ymmv, etc.), but much more in time.

<driven across the US more times than I can recount in the name of Rock & Roll Inc.

QFT. 15 or 20 bucks each way and you can take a nap.

yea, go up through the holland tunnel. it'll save u about $10 in tolls, but it'll cost u an hour plus 10 extra miles.

Suck it up. If you're worried about the tolls then you need to make other reductions in your living expenses.

going from brooklyn to NJ you could've avoided taking the verrazano bridge (it's a one way toll, westbound to Staten Island only) by going to NJ via manhattan (taking Brooklyn Bridge).

but you do waste a lot more miles going that way, not to mention time spent in downtown cross-manhattan traffic

    verrazano on the way in
    holland on the way out

nothing else really available that doesn't cost you more money via mileage

on second thought taking 78E like the above google maps directions have it might not be that bad. the turnpike is what's really costing you so skipping that would be the best gain

Any route that takes you across manhattan on canal street is going to cost you a lot of time.

Just be thankful you're in a car and not a big tig, driving thru some of those states I think cost me more money than I made that day.
