how to migrate outlook express msgs to win98se

upgrading to different laptop.

old laptop - Win98 internet explorer 5.5, outlook express.
new laptop - Win98se ie 5.5, outlook express.

I tried copying the old laptop's *.dbx files to a cd, then create new folder in OExpress on new laptop, then move one of the .dbx files into that file using explorer. When I go back into OE and click on that folder, OE says it can't open that folder.

help?

thanks.

When I go back into OE and click on that folder, OE says it can't open that folder.

I can't really understand what you mean by "click on that folder" within OE (from which command?). As long as you have the old .dbx files and know where they are, here's what you need to do:

1. Go to "tools" -> "option"->"maintenance" tab
2. Click on "Storage Folder(?)"- it's "folder" something..my OE commands are not in English
3. Change the storage folder to the one with old .dbx files
4. Restart OE

You should now have all old messages. Good luck.

By "click on that folder in OE" I mean use the mouse to click on the folder in the folder list on the left hand side.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. Mysteriously, it only half-worked. I had some additional mail folders I had created - some of them got migrated and some of them didn't, following your suggestion. To get the rest of them, I had to manually create each folder in OE. THen go to the filesystem, see that the new folder had a name like OldEmail (1).dbx. Delete OldEmail (1).dbx. Rename OldEmail.dbx to OldEmail (1).dbx. Voila, OE can see the messages in that folder.

thanks again.

Just open your Outlook Express 5 on the receiving PC and click on 'File'. In the dropdown menu, click on 'Import'. Choose 'Messages'. Follow the instructions to specify the location where to import from.

I backup all of my outlook files whenever i format and this is one ive come across....you copied them onto a cd yes, well they are now marked as read-only and outlook throws a wobbly at the sight of them. Right click on the file, select properties, and uncheck read only. Unless there is something else wrong then that should do the trick nicely.
