I am replacing some speakers in the Jeep but I really dont know what to measure. Do i measure the actual speaker itself, or the metal aroudn it that you put the screw through? I measured the entire thing and got 5 1/4" but just where the speaker part is, measures 4". So I could buy 4 or 5 1/4 but only one would work. Does that go for oblong speakers? Like 4x6? I really dont know and theres no indications on my speakers of what they are, if you know anything about this or know someone that does, please post! Thanx

You measure from one edge of the metal to the other.
5.25 is a standard size.
as is 4x6.

So if the actual hole is 5.25", You need 6.5" speakers. Because the screw holes go on the outside! I did it wrong, because i measured the hole and it was 5.25" so I got 5.25" speakers and they were small 'cause the screw holes were inside the actual speaker hole!

Crutchfield.com has good info on what speakers fit what cars, in case you aren't sure.

The ones im replacing are what i got from a junk yard, in a small speaker box that i have bolted to the side in the back. Thanx everybody.
