How to manually extract files from Win98 CD?

I've been struggling with a problem with my system ever since upgrading the mobo and cpu. Device manager is giving me an error message "compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance".

Anyway, I have been working with a Microsoft troubleshooting file. One thing it recommends is to make sure certain drivers have not become corrupted. It suggests either manually extracting the appropriate files, which are 'esdi_506.pdr' and 'ios.vxd', from the Win98 cd, or running setup and choosing the verify option.

Can someone tell me how to manually extract the files? I seem to recall that the files on the win98 cd are compressed files, .cab I think. How do I know which one to look for? How do I extract it?

Also, I've been trying to figure out how to choose a verify option in setup, but can't figure out what they're talking about. Any ideas?
 
One word for extracting the files: WinZip.

Can't tell you how to figure out which one you want, except that there are only so many CAB files you can look at until you find the one you want 🙂
 
I agree--Winzip. If you're having a lot of problems with your system, I have to recommend copying the entire Win98 directory off of the CD onto the hard drive. I've been having problems with my computer after reinstalling Win98 (see previous posts), and it seems to lose the CDROM sometimes. Having them all backed up is easy way to save yourself time and trouble. Also, sometimes when reinstalling, Windows will actually tell you which .cab file it wants, or will find it on its own.
 
window came with a file extractor utility called extract.exe, which is used to extra files from the CAB files. but it's a pain to use, unless you are bored (like me), use winzip instead. or in the situation there's no winzip (DOS mode).
 
the BEST way to replace windows files is to go start..run...then type "sfc" and it will prompt you to choose which file you want to replace and then where to get that file from (and you just pick the win98 cabs directory) and it does the work for ya
 
in win98 click on start - programs - accessories - system tools - system information - tools - and system flie checker
which will let you check all the files to see if any are corrupt or let you reinstall a file from win98 cd
which is the same as using <run sfc > above
you might also check in the control panel under system - performance -file system - troubleshooting and make sure none of the check boxs are checked in the troubleshooting list
