look at this

I removed an older drive which WAS C: and E: Partition

Restarted the comp and Win2000 did not re-assign the emptied drive assignment.!!!!!

I can re-assign the non-boot/system drives. But That is not the point. I want to make my D: --> C:
and G: --> D:

Bozo is right: you can't reletter the system partition. Very Bad Things would happen. Windows finds its own OS files through the filesystem using drive letter and path. If you change the drive letter, Windows won't be able to find it's own files. (Yes, you could might get around this with enough registry hacking, but it's too risky.) If your OS was originally on the D: drive, keep it there. If it was originally on the C: drive and that drive shows up as D: now, let me know and I'll tell you how to change it back.

To reletter the other drives, go to Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management, right-click on the partition in the right hand pane, select "Change Drive Letter and Path."

D is always Win2000 which I am glad.

I want to move the G:(win98) back to C: <- which I cannot since it is the system drive

<<I can re-assign the non-boot/system drives. But That is not the point. I want to make my D: --> C:

THIS I typed wrongly. Didnt mean to say D:->C:

All I want now is to move the SYSTEM drive (G:) back to C:. But I cannot and I know why.

I guess I will have to live up to screwed drive letter or do a totally reinstall :(

Try this it may work, if it doesn't you won't be any worse off than starting fresh.
Your boot.ini file should look like this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
change it to look like this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Then disconnect the physical win98 drive so the only HD in the system is win2k.
Reboot. You should only see the win2k drive and it should be c: now. Shut down and reconnect the win98 drive. Make sure you set the jumpers on the drive so the win2k drive is master and the win98 drive is the slave when you hook them up again. Win2k will always see the ide drives first during a install if you are running ide raid or scsi controller. I always disconnect all my hd drives from the system when I install win2k except for the one that I am installing on so that it is c:. I not sure about your boot environment, if you are running system commander or windows boot manager. You may have to allow for that in the boot.ini also. Good luck
