How to make videos off of video camera smaller when on PC?

Ok my friend video taped some stuff (about 1 1/2 hour) with his camera (Sony Handycam not sure the exact model) and then we put it on my PC using NeroVision Express 3. But once it is on my PC it is a .AVI and it is 18.00GBs. Is there any way to compress this, without losing a lot of quality? I tried opening it in VSO ConvertXtoDVD but it wont open. Is there any program that will let me convert it to a smaller format? Or any way to make it smaller without huge quality loss, or deleting parts? Also I have Pinnacle Studio 10, and Adobe Premiere.

Virtualdub will do it, there are plenty of tutorials around. DivX will give you good compression.
