This THREAD about quitting job and going on a month long hike on the Appalachian trail got me thinking.

i'm an unhappy computer geek in his 20's. i have the funds to last me a year. but i have no idea what i want to do.

yeah, i have the standard fantasies:
1) photographer for Playboy
2) start a Porn company
3) etc

i have no idea what i want to do that's realistic.

Suggestions on how to figure out on making the most of life?

Material needs do not make me happy. I find it stupid that people buy stuff just to keep up w/the Jones.

I just want to figure out what i want to do in life.

any books to recommend to start?
 
1 - probably won't happen. i'd bet it is a know someone only type of trade
2 - impossible with the current competition, you would be bankrupt in less than a year
3 - i'm currently looking for this option too 🙂
 
i heard mercenaries for hire make good money

or you could do something to help children in a 3rd world country

been there, done that with Age of Empires II, and Diablo II. it was fun, but still felt like i was wasting my life.
 
I'm in the same boat, kind of. I'm thinking about going to Asia to teach English for a year. They pay your expenses, so you don't have to burn up your savings.

Use computers only for work.

Try it for a month, it puts things in perspective.

I had to got to Mexico for about a month on a controls systems install. By the end of the month I was healthier and enjoyed life more.

Came back and built a new faster computer. LOL

Hmm, lazy isn't the right word. Lazy as it refers to a job, not with how to live life. I.E. take what you get that 1st decade out of college and make it work for you instead of you working for it.
