first, is there any program, or some other way to prevent the cd drive from spinning up (and temporarely halting the comp, as it does so) each time I look at a directory tree?
also, is there some way to make the drive spin down AS SOON as it doesn't need to read anymore? (I'm tired of having it spin up to being really noisy just for a game cd check or something and then it takes a few mins of it being idle before it spins down.

I don;t know of a specific utility to do that, I simply don't keep CD's in the drive(s).

depends on the drives support, I know my plextor has options for such things. also if its making the whole thing studder you may want to think about moving it to its own ide header, or simply getting a better cdrom. But as for 3rd party software, I did see one once but it tended to lock up win98, its only supported system. That was years ago anyway I haven't used winder9x in a long time. Good luck with that I know i can certainly be annoying. oooo also might want to look at a cd caching program, I've heard they word mighty well.

My guess is it depends on your brand of drive. My Teac has a utility download that I can use to adjust certain settings like spin down time. I forget now but I think mine is adjustable from 15 seconds to 2 minutes.

I don't know of any way of adjusting the spin up. Your OS makes calls to the cd for info.

What OS are you running?
