1. Go to grocery store and buy a box of minute rice for <$1.50
2. Pour one cup of water into a pot and place it onto a burner on your stove.
3. Bring the water to a boil.
4. Remove pot with boiling water from the heat and add one cup of minute rice.
5. Cover and let stand for 5 minutes.
6. Enjoy! Makes 2 servings.

I usually add twice the water as rice, or slightly less. i.e., for one cup of rice I'll add 1.75 to 2 cups water. That gets it just about perfect.

If all you have available is just regular rice then you will have to boil the rice in water until it gets soft. I don't know how long that takes because I only use Minute Rice.

If you're buying non instant rice remember to rinse it before you put it in the cooker.

I haven't cooked rice without a rice cooker in year, but if I remember right...

-boil water (I used to add some bullion to give the rice flavor)
-add rice
-lower heat to a simmer
-heat covered until water gets absorbed (10-15 minutes maybe? I can't remember exactly.)

That's how Asians I know do it and it stands up to Alton Browns method. Actually, the Asians I know fill the water up one knuckle above the riceline. Alton Brown says you need proportionally less water as the amount of rice increases. For the typical family of four it ends up being about 1.5:1 water to rice, ime......but that's after rinsing off the rice thoroughly before hand which adds water to it in the process.
