How to make MSN messenger exit completely?

When I sign out from Windows Messenger, It signs off correctly.

Now, when I ask it to close down (from taskbar's right side clock panel) it gives error that it is being used by other programs. I want it to close it down by some method other than using the Ctrl-Alt-Del method from the task manager.

It uses my sys memory for no reason after I am finished with it.

Any reg keys to modify? Or changes in options or prefrences?

go to your start button then go to run and type in

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

taht will completly remove MSN Messenger from your system. make sure you restart after you had done that.

I am sure it will not let you since it's part of windows XP Pro as well as Outlook Express.

It tells you when you try to exit that it needs to stay open. Anyway try to download MSN Messenger from the net and I think it might let you exit once you throw that version on there.

not remove it permenantely, just to make it exit. It doesn't exits properly and keeps residing in memory

Do you have Outlook Express or Outlook running? Have you closed all of your IE windows? There are settings within Outlook/OE to disable messenger integration.

They don't always work. It didn't work for me 🙁

Ya, you wanna disable Windows Messenging (not to be confused with MSN Messenger) or else you are vulnerable to pop-ups that can do so even when you're not using the Internet, like right in the middle of a game!:|

I still think he means Windows Messenger... you can't really sign off on the service, "Messenger".

I had this problem too. I was able to finally close the messenger tray item after making a change in Norton Antivirus. In the options there is a section for the messenger, and MSN Messenger is one of the choices. I deselected that and was then able to close it.

You have to open up msn mesenger go to file then click on properties then uncheck run at startup or start when windows starts.. It will be something like that. 🙂

MrChad came closest to the correct answer.

Windows Messenger integrates with OE, GameVoice and the MSN browser (MSN7 or MSN8). Except for MSN7, attempts to exit Windows Messenger will fail...you would need to exit the integrated app first before you can exit Windows Messenger in these scenarios.

If you are running Outlook Express or MSN and that is what is causing your problem, this will solve it:

1. Load Regedit
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Outlook Express
3. Make there a new DWORD and name it Hide Messenger
4. Make the Value 2

You will see that Windows Messenger will not come up and can be closed when you start or run MSN and/or Outlook Express.
