How to make IE open OE links in new tab?

Here's a difference between Firefox and IE that I can't figure out. Let's assume I'm starting with no browser window open. With Firefox, if I click on a link in an email notification from the forum, that link opens a Firefox window. If I click on a link in another email notification from the forum, that link opens in another tab in the same Firefox window.

With IE, the first link opens a new IE window, same as Firefox. But, if I click on a link in another email notification from the forum, that link opens in the same tab in the same IE window. How do I make IE open subsequent links in new tabs?
